Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy

The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department responded.

Hodgkinson, 66, was killed in a gunfight with cops and Capitol Police.

Reps. Ron DeSantis, R-Florida, and Jeff Duncan, R-South Carolina, told reporters Wednesday that the gunman approached them in their vehicle and asked whether "Republicans or Democrats" were on the field before the shooting.

The handwritten list reportedly included the names of Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks, South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan and Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, who were all at the baseball practice, according to NBC News and CNN.

After it was confirmed James Hodgkinson shot Scalise and four others during a practice for the annual Congressional Baseball Game, Sen.

The FBI do not suspect her of any involvement in yesterday's shootings and have treated her as an important witness to the background to the attack in Virginia. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) determined both were purchased legally, the FBI said Thursday.

"He was home all day long".

DALE WALSH: I just want to let people know that he wasn't evil, that he was, I guess, exhausted of some of the politics that are going on. The YMCA said that Hodgkinson had canceled his membership on Tuesday, and said he was moving. "I'm prayerful he will pull through, and I hope he does", he said.

Hodgkinson was found to have had a handgun and 7.62-caliber rifle that both were purchased by licensed sellers, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in an update Thursday. "Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter". He died after officers in Scalise's security detail fired back at him. A congressional staffer, Zach Barth, was shot in the leg; he was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, the Post reports.

Back in IL at least one friend of Hodgkinson - who didn't give his full name - defended him, saying, "I just want to let people know he wasn't evil, that he was exhausted of some of the politics going on".

"He was in a few fights and stuff like that, nothing would demonstrate violence as far as what he did", a friend of Hodgkinson said. Authorities also were going over a cellphone, computer and camera taken from Hodgkinson's white van, which was parked near the ballfield. He always drank Budweiser from a can and drank alone, barely speaking to anyone, including the bartenders.

"I think anybody that ever played baseball, the dream was to play in a major league stadium", Richmond said a year ago. "Nothing I can really put my finger on, but he was just not a pleasant person". And, Steve, I want you to know that you have the prayers not only of the entire city behind you, but of an entire nation and, frankly, the entire world.
