Wisconsinite Steve Stricker in position for weekend berth at Erin Hills

Marc Leishman has maintained his position high on the leaderboard midway through the second round at the US Open.

The round was littered with some wonderful approach shots and long putts as Thomas took advantage of overnight rains to move to 11-under, one shot off the lead by Brian Harman.

The world number two hit just five fairways to tie for last in the 156-man field in that category as a record 44 players broke par on day one, surpassing the previous best of 39 at Medinah in 1990.

Four years after Justin Rose ended a 43-year wait for an English victor, Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood headed into the third round of the US Open at Erin Hills in a four-way tie for the lead.

American Rickie Fowler tamed Erin Hills to claim the first-round lead at the US Open on Thursday, making the so-called toughest test in golf look easy with a record-equalling display while the big guns failed to fire. The Englishman shot a 1-under 71, but had to fight back from two bogeys and a triple bogey in his first six holes.

Also missing the weekend were No. 2 Rory McIlroy and No. 3 Jason Day, who played together for the first two rounds to disastrous results. About all that save Erin Hills from another onslaught was a forecast for the strongest wind of the week. "Even though it's very disappointing to not be here on the weekend, I think these last two rounds will serve me well going into the summer".

Thomas poured in the eagle to become the 29th player with a 63 in a major championship. The ball landed on the front of the green just soft enough that it rolled out 8 feet by the hole.

"It means I'm a part of history". It's just that you've got to keep it in the short grass, out of that fescue, don't make any bogies. Day, who welcomed adverse conditions and a hard golf course, fought off a two-way miss and couldn't make putts we're used to seeing him hole.

There's a four-way tie for the lead at the U.S. Open. He shot 73 and missed the cut by three. "I just happened to be in the flawless spot".

It was more positive news for Leishman, who is the only Australian still alive in the tournament on 4-under through 36 holes following an even-par 72.

"I had no idea that nine-under was the best ever in an Open, so that was pretty cool once I saw my card".

"Guess what? We get to go home today because Daddy played poorly", Day said to his son, Dash, before walking over to sign autographs.

He had a chance to match Jonny Miller's U.S. Open record for low round in relation to par, but he settled for par on the 676-yard 18th.

Rory McIlroy and Jason Day are trying to make up ground at the U.S. Open - not on the leader, but on the cut line. "You play 54 holes around here before the tournament, I felt really really comfortable". And I think that's a testament to the set-up of the golf course, that when you set up a golf course in a fair manner and the weather is good, the scores are going to be low.

It was the first time Day has missed the cut in seven U.S. Opens.

"Having a win this year at Honda, being in contention at majors in the past, and having The PLAYERS win has definitely done a lot for me", Fowler said.

"Someone has a very good chance of ending up with their first major tomorrow", Fowler said. McIlroy came to life when it was far too late.

Another warm, dry day is drying out the course during the second round of the U.S. Open, and the players are noticing a difference. That left only four of the top 12 in the world to play the weekend at Erin Hills.
