Corbyn says Labour 'government in waiting' and May premiership 'without mandate'

But the verdict has certainly diluted the emphatic "yes" to Brexit in the referendum held past year. The Conservative Party leader has a net approval rating of -35%, having been rated +10% by Brits in April after she announced the election.

It seems that the public's view of Theresa May and the Conservative party has been badly damaged by the election, while Labour and Jeremy Corbyn have gone up in people's estimations.

The overarching consensus appears to be that the Conservatives were trounced by the Labour Party when it came to rallying support and generating positive messages about their policies online. This was nothing more than "internal banter" now completely taken out of context.

The figure it gave in its poll after the 2015 election was that 36% of 18 to 29 year olds had voted Labour with 32% voting Conservative - if correct that is a huge swing among young voters. This is anything but 'Strong and Stable' government promised ad nauseam by Theresa May during the election campaign. Brexit upset many of those certainties this time.

Welcoming the party's seven Scottish MPs who won seats in the June snap election, Corbyn claimed that momentum would lead Labour onto further gains at any future election. Although those results were not as bad for Labour as some pundits like Scully had predicted, Labour did lose dozens of council seats.

Certainly, in Britain, it won't have been the young people reading the broadsheet newspaper op-ed columns pontificating about how Corbyn as leader meant certain electoral oblivion for Labour, or the character assassinations of Corbyn vomited out by the Sun and Daily Mail. I think in 2010, two years after the crash, people thought we were going to have to buckle down in order to clear the deficit and the promise was: buckle down, let's have austerity, the deficit will be cleared by 2015.

The Conservative Party now seems in chaos - afraid to keep her, afraid to let her go, trying to hold onto power in alliance with the DUP, a party out of step with the rest of the United Kingdom on abortion, same sex marriage and LGBT rights. Mr Starmer, in this sense, led by example by rejoining the leader's shadow frontbench team following Owen Smith's failed attempt to win control of the party last summer.

Call it populism, or call it what you will, but voters simply want their elected leaders to "stand up and deliver" for them, the people. The chances of the Brexit negotiations collapsing have also increased. By losing her high stakes gamble Mrs May has sacrificed her credibility, and that will bring great uncertainty to everything she does, including Brexit. While May's first non-European overseas visit as prime minister was to India, there will be limited bandwidth in this new government for focusing on post-Brexit relationships such as that with India.
