Britain's snap election backfires on Prime Minister Theresa May

The U.K. Independence Party, which won 12.6 percent in the last election, saw its vote share collapse: It earned just 2 percent of the vote and lost its only seat in Westminster.

But Brexit talks - which are due to start in 10 day's time - could be delayed and the Prime Minister's personal authority undermined by the shock result.

Speaking to the BBC, Mrs May - who today said she will form a minority government after meeting the Queen - refused to answer whether she considered resigning as the results poured in last night and in the early hours of today. One regional election is still not final.

At that point, polls predicted she would massively increase the slim majority she had inherited from predecessor David Cameron.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves Downing Street on her way to Buckingham Palace after Britain's election in London June 9, 2017. "What the country needs more than ever is certainty", she said, justifying why the Conservatives, alongside the DUP, were the right party to lead the country. I would've thought that's enough to go, actually. May should "make way for a government that will be truly representative". It will take time - and probably another election - for matters to be resolved. She called Thursday's snap election in a bid to strengthen her hand ahead of hard divorce negotiations with the European bloc.

The results showed Conservatives winning 318 seats in a House of Commons where 326 seats are needed for the barest of majorities.

Following the 1910 and 2010 elections, the sitting government successfully held on to power, but none of these elections is comparable to the current result.

Reuters reports that Gunther H. Oettinger, a European Commission budget and human resources commissioner, expressed doubt about the talks starting as planned.

"And this gives me the confidence to believe that we will be able to work together in the interests of the whole United Kingdom". "Time for everyone to regroup".

Conservative member of parliament Anna Soubry was the first in the party to disavow May in public, calling on the prime minister to "consider her position".

And he heaped praise on Labour supporters, saying: "Your vote for us was a vote for change, a vote for our country, and a vote for hope".

The EU wants a "legally smooth British departure" in March 2019, the wire service says.

Though The Guardian reports that there are fears in the EU Parliament that the "hung parliament and weak prime minister are a "disaster" that threaten negotiations", it seems likely that Brexit will go ahead regardless.

"The time for Brexit negotiations is getting tight", Germany's European Union commissioner Guenther Oettinger said Friday.

Some youths may also have taken revenge on their parents and grandparents for supporting Brexit - support for leaving the European Union was much higher among older generations in the referendum a year ago on whether Britain should leave the EU.

May's campaign catchphrase of a "strong and stable government" has backfired. One of May's top ministers, Home Secretary Amber Rudd, faced a recount in her south coast constituency, an indication that the result there was very close. "That's what we have seen tonight".

The broadcaster said Sturgeon was "disappointed at the SNP losses".

"I don't think that's in the hearts and minds of Londoners at the minute, (not) almost as much as security is", said Sheard, 22.
