Philippines soldiers killed in 'friendly fire' air strike in Marawi

Terrorists from other countries were among those killed by military forces in Marawi City, according to the Philippine government.

Militants flying black Islamic State (IS) group flags rampaged through Marawi almost two weeks ago, triggering clashes with troops and police that have left at least 178 people dead.

"They comprise 37 men and 1 woman", he said at the national police headquarters.

"The first plane dropped the ordnance accurately, but the second one missed".

Almost 1,500 residents have been rescued from neighborhoods at the scenes of clashes, including 179 people who were plucked from danger after troops held their fire for four hours Sunday in a "humanitarian pause" to allow the rescue in specific areas, military spokesman Brig.

The military added 21 armoured vehicles and a third battalion of troops to the operation on Thursday to put an end to the occupation.

Padilla said this following President Rodrigo Duterte's pronouncement on Sunday that MNLF founding chair Nur Misuari has agreed to send his troops to fight the Islamist militants rampaging across Marawi.

Philippine airstrikes aimed at Islamist militants who are holding hostages as human shields in a southern city killed 11 soldiers, authorities said yesterday, as they conceded hundreds of gunmen may have escaped a blockade. Indonesians, Malaysians, Pakistanis, Saudis, Chechens, Yemenis, Indians, Moroccans, and Turks have been identified among the militants trying to secure control of the city.

"We don't have any record of them coming through the proper channel, through the airports. There's only one way, maybe coming from Indonesia or from Malaysia".

In the document, Mr. Duterte ordered the military to "undertake all measures to prevent and suppress all acts of rebellion and lawless violence in the whole of Mindanao". "But we will add appropriate measures to ensure that such an incident is avoided", Padilla said.

"They have taken part in terrorist activities there". Militants from Southeast Asia fighting for ISIS in Iraq and Syria released a video previous year urging sympathizers to pick up the fight in the southern Philippines.

He said the Maute group was being given too much credit, and that the occupation of Marawi was the work of Islamic State, and planned a long time ago. A government representative said negotiations were continuing for another temporary ceasefire on Monday.

The civilians were pinned down almost two weeks ago in the centre of Marawi on Mindanao island, where gunmen loyal to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are holding out against a military assault.

With the announcement of the so-called "friendly fire" incident, the combined death toll has reached 139 as of Wednesday-89 of which were militants, 19 civilians, and 31 from the security forces.

Duterte has asked the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), an Islamic separatist movement based on Mindanao, to help negotiate a peace deal with the militants, who are predominantly drawn from the Maute Group based in and around Marawi.
