New Zealand wins toss, will bowl 1st against England

In a cold and blustery Cardiff, England posted a decent total of 310 against New Zealand, with Joe Root, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales all making half-centuries.

The England bowlers later on bowled with fire to restrict the New Zealand batting line up to 223 runs.

If Australia beat England in their last group match at Edgbaston, both teams will be in the semi-finals as they enjoy better net run-rate.

Victory for England on Tuesday would see them into the semi-finals of a 50-over tournament featuring the world's top eight one-day worldwide teams.

"They had a number of contributions which allowed them to get what I think was an above-par score", said Williamson.

New Zealand, who saw pacemen Corey Anderson (three for 55) and Adam Milne (three for 79) share six wickets, fought back well with the ball.

With Australia and Bangladesh sharing the spoils in their draw on Monday, England now lead Group A with four points.

The No.3 accumulated a solid fifty from 66 balls without ever dominating and was undone by a snorter from Mark Wood which bounced off his gloves to the keeper.

Morgan added: "With the inconsistent bounce in the pitch, I genuinely thought that if we took one wicket, we would take two". Pointing out that the leg-spinner has always played well against the Kiwis, Morgan said the leg-spinner's track record was key to his selection.

Williamson showed his class and struck as many as eight boundaries to take New Zealand forward. But certainly his confidence is high against their side.

When Morgan also departed after a poor shot on 13, England were in danger of stalling. We never take any position that we've ever been in, for granted.

"We know how well we've done and we know that if we perform to anywhere near our capability we are going to be a really tough team to beat", said England all-rounder Ben Stokes.

"And Australia are one of the best teams". In fact they looked all set to chase down the target with 158-2 after 30 overs.

"We are still striving to win the game regardless of our situation with the bat because we bat so deep with such a powerful line up, but today a lot of credit goes to our bowlers".
