Brexit talks may not start on time

The speech will be followed by several days of debate and a vote.

He told reporters in Berlin that the exact procedures for the move could be decided at a meeting of European Union leaders later this month. May should be able to use these two set-piece events to shape the country's future.

It came as the European Commission's chief negotiator warned that Britain risks crashing out of the EU with no deal if it wastes any more of the time available for Brexit negotiations.

One of those is Ruth Davidson, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives who helped the party win 12 more seats in contrast to losses elsewhere, one of the few whose personal stature was enhanced by the result.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny has sought assurances from Mrs May that "nothing should happen" to endanger the Good Friday Agreement.

With Northern Ireland having been without a powersharing executive since March and without a first and deputy first minister since January, a new three-week process to salvage devolution is starting in Belfast on Monday.

After Theresa May's failed gamble to hold early elections delivered a hung assembly, UK's Prime Minister has managed to form a minority government.

She sat in "stony-faced silence" when the exit poll was released at 10pm, and "took a minute to say anything" when it became clear that the Tories had lost their House of Commons' majority.

Republican Sinn Fein won seven seats but historically hasn't taken them up in the London chamber.

"We are going into these talks with the national interest at heart".

Brexit minister David Davis insisted the government still aimed to take Britain out of the European Union single market. "This doesn't depend entirely on us".

With a deal still to be confirmed, there was speculation that the announcement of the government's agenda, known as the Queen's Speech, could be delayed by from the planned date next Monday.

Britain's descent into political crisis just days before the Brexit talks begin has sapped confidence amongst business leaders and infuriated bosses who were already grappling with the fallout from the vote to leave the EU.

The return to the Cabinet of Mr Gove - who clashed bitterly with Mrs May over tackling extremism when they were in Government together under David Cameron - will be seen as an attempt to head off any challenge from the Brexiteer wing of the party.

He also said the government would still "walk away" with no deal if talks broke down on ending Britain's four-decade membership of the bloc.

DUP leader Arlene Foster is due to meet May on Tuesday for crunch talks, which could force the delay of the government's presentation of its legislative programme to parliament by Queen Elizabeth II, due on June 19. She has called for an "open Brexit" strategy that would focus on retaining trade ties and has said she wants a role in devising the government's policy.

He said the United Kingdom reserved the right to pull out from the talks in order to make the best deal over the terms of departure from the bloc.

Meanwhile, Mrs May reappointed most of her ministers but brought a Brexit campaigner and party rival into government to try to unite the Conservative Party.

He said there was no appetite among the public for a leadership contest which could plunge the party into a fresh general election.

However, George Osborne, a former finance minister who is now editor of London's Evening Standard newspaper and a vocal critic of May, said she appeared a "dead woman walking".

Davis told ITV he's loyal to May and there's a distinction between "running a campaign and running a country".

Even if Corbyn is unable to challenge government, the Conservatives may find it hard to pass policies through the House without a more comfortable majority, especially with an alliance with a party that disagrees with it so much.

Media reports said that May had also assured MPs that the working arrangement with the DUP would have no impact on issues such as gay rights.
