Top two aides to British PM May quit

Nick Timothy, May's co-chief of staff, said on the ConservativeHome website that he stepped down on Friday, while the BBC reported that Fiona Hill had also quit. But the ballot-box humiliation has seriously - and possibly mortally - wounded her leadership just as Britain is about to begin complex exit talks with the European Union.

Asked if there will be another general election this year, Mr Corbyn said: "I think it's quite possible there'll be an election later this year or early next year, and that might be a good thing because we can not go on with a period of great instability".

This is likely to pose an obstacle to the types of strict border controls advocated by those in the Conservative Party who support a "hard" Brexit.

He told ITV: "Clearly if she's got a worse result than two years ago and is nearly unable to form a government then she, I doubt, will survive in the long term as Conservative party leader".

Johnson tweeted that an article in the Mail on Sunday newspaper headlined "Boris set to launch bid to be PM as May clings on" was "tripe".

Mr Kenny, who will formally retire as Taoiseach in the coming days to be replaced by new Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar, said he spoke with Mrs May about protecting the Good Friday Agreement.

May's party won 318 seats, eight short of the 326 they needed for an outright majority.

The probability of a clean divorce from the European Union, a so-called "hard Brexit", can play out in different ways.

Most European politicians were dismayed at the apparently inconclusive nature of the election result, particularly on how Brexit - for which there is no precedent - should be negotiated.

A party councillor in Ballymena reportedly claimed Hurricane Katrina, which killed more than 1,500 people in the United States, was God's revenge for New Orleans hosting an annual gay pride event.

However, Mrs May insisted that, as the leader of the largest party in the new parliament, she had a duty to act in the "national interest".

According to Neil Wilson from ETX Capital, May's decision to hang on as prime minister is worrying the City and will drive the pound lower.

Former minister Anna Soubry said Mrs May should "consider her position" after a "dreadful campaign" while backbencher Heidi Allen suggested she could be out within a matter of months, depending on the Brexit negotiations. "He also noted the absence of any nationalist voice in Westminster following the election".

May had called the election to build upon her majority; instead, the party lost it.

The prime minister has since come under fire for hubris, as well as a poor performance on the campaign trail and a manifesto blunder that alienated many core supporters.

The result left the DUP as kingmakers after picking up ten seats that will prop up Theresa May as she returns to Downing Street.

It is not thought that Mrs May has offered a full coalition with the DUP, which was catapulted into the role of kingmaker after boosting its Westminster tally by two MPs to 10.

But another prominent internal critic, former education secretary Nicky Morgan, said Mrs May should "carry on" and was "entitled" to see whether she can form an administration.

Here are six key takeaways from the most unexpected of elections.

"I take responsibility for my part in this election campaign, which was the oversight of our policy programme".

"The mandate she's got is lost Conservative seats, lost votes, lost support and lost confidence", he said.

"What the country needs more than ever is certainty", she said.

Tory sources indicated she would continue in Number 10.
