May's election gamble backfires as voters throw a surprise

European Union leaders expressed fears that May's shock loss of her majority would delay the Brexit talks, due to begin on June 19, and so raise the risk of negotiations failing. Nobody expects her to lead the Conservatives into the next general election and most predict she will be gone within months.

The Labour party and DUP have worked together in the past, but the latter joining hands with Labour was ruled out due to Corbyn being its leader: Corbyn has always been associated with DUP's rival in trouble-torn Northern Ireland politics, Sinn Fein. One regional election is still not final.

The biggest victor was Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

"The Prime Minister called this election because she wanted a mandate".

During the night, Brexit Secretary David Davis appeared to concede that the Conservatives had lost their mandate to leave the EU single market and customs union. I would've thought that's enough to go, actually.

May took a gamble in April by calling for the snap election.

"It's important to have a Government that can take the Brexit negotiations through".

Young, urban Britons especially, rely on the European Union for study or work overseas, and overwhelmingly voted to remain. Her Conservatives lost 12 seats in Thursday's election and finished eight seats short of winning a majority. Labour, written off as nearly unelectable just weeks ago, surpassed expectations by securing 261 seats in a last-minute surge of support.

Some EU officials had voiced hope that a stronger majority for May could allow her to make more concessions in the negotiations.

When the talks do begin, there could be a very different approach from the "hard Brexit" advocated by May that would involve leaving Europe's single market and curbing European immigration.

Reuters reports that Gunther H. Oettinger, a European Commission budget and human resources commissioner, expressed doubt about the talks starting as planned.

In a victory speech devoid of humility, the Prime Minister proffered a government which is the total opposite of "strong and stable" and the embodiment of a "coalition of chaos". "Time for everyone to regroup". Her office said later that the key finance, foreign, Brexit, interior and defence ministers would remain unchanged. "We should clearly come to terms with the British to start as quickly as possible".

The Tories, as they are commonly known in the United Kingdom, will now have to govern as a minority party, or try to form a coalition government, or force another general election.

Within the two years of talks, Britain wants to not only agree on the terms of its exit but also negotiate a new relationship on things like trade and security. "We know when they must end", he said, referring to the March 2019 deadline. European officials are anxious that the weaker position of the Conservatives make a breakdown in negotiations more likely.

However, many MPs have urged her to stay on.

The losses complicate the SNP's plans to push for a new referendum on Scottish independence as Britain prepares to leave the EU.

To some, the early numbers suggest that younger Britons wanted to turn the tide on their country's decision past year to leave the European Union.

While Britain's voters sent a clear signal of dissatisfaction to the ruling Conservatives, they were not prepared to put the opposition Labour Party into power. Business leaders and economists say any return of a frontier would be devastating to the economies of Ireland and Northern Ireland because they are so entwined.
