Trump denounces 'horrific attack' on London

ISIS claimed responsibility on Sunday (June 4) for an attack by knife-wielding men who mowed down and stabbed revellers in London, killing seven people before being shot dead in a barrage of police gunfire, AFP reported.

Prime Minister Theresa May Sunday called for tougher measures to fight Islamic extremism after attackers using a vehicle and knives killed seven people in a busy area of London and disrupted Britain's election campaign just days before a nationwide vote.

Twelve people were arrested in counterterrorism raids in the Barking area of east London, police said on Sunday.

The London attack came after a deadly bombing at a May 22 Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, said in a statement late Saturday night that "Londoners should be aware that there will be additional armed and unarmed police officers on our streets from tonight in order to keep Londoners, and all those visiting our city safe".

Police initially said officers were also responding to a third incident, in the Vauxhall neighborhood, but later said that turned out to be an unrelated stabbing.

May said that Britain was facing a new threat from copycat attacks, and "it is time to say 'enough is enough.'" She called for worldwide agreements to curb online extremism, said longer jail sentences might be needed for terrorism offenses and argued that there is "far too much tolerance of extremism in our country".

The major political parties suspended national election campaigning after the attack b ut Mrs May confirmed the poll would go ahead on Thursday.

Khan said Sunday that Londoners should all remain vigilant as the terrorist threat level is severe.

"We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are", she said, adding there was "far too much tolerance of extremism in our country". Khan specifically informed the public that the increased police presence would include armed anti-terrorism officers. Anyone with images or footage of Saturday night's attack have been urged to share it with counter-terror police to assist their investigation.

According to NPR.org, the attacks began at 10 pm local time on Saturday when the speeding van hit, what eye-witnesses have reportedly said "five to six" people.

Four French citizens were among the wounded.

Paul Crowther, chief constable of the BTP, said the officer - who plays rugby in his spare time and is less than two years into his police career - showed "enormous courage in the face of danger".

Trump said he had spoken with British Prime Minister Theresa May to express America's "unwavering support" and offer US assistance as the British government works to protect its citizens and bring the guilty to justice.

Conservative politician Penny Mordaunt tweeted the transcript of Khan's interview and said: "I'm standing with resilient London and him". "It was a rampage really", he said, adding that he heard a shout of: "This is for Allah".

"I went 'Oi, terrorists, cowards, Oi!'" he told The Associated Press. Masood was shot dead by police.

Several people said they were ordered by the police to stay inside pubs and restaurants as the terror raged outside.

Borough Market, with its alleyways beneath and near London Bridge, is filled by day with specialty food stalls, and by night - particularly on a spring evening like Saturday - with patrons who flock to bars, clubs and restaurants.

Mrs May will try to re-focus the campaign her leadership and will say later on Monday that the right leader is vital for a strong economy and successful Brexit at a time when the United Kingdom faces a very serious terror threat.

Rowley lauded the courage of officers who ran toward the attack as it unfolded.
