California leaders hold steady on climate goals

US President Donald Trump will reveal whether or not the United States will pull out of the Paris climate change agreement at 7am on Friday (NZ time).

The news of Mr Trump's likely snub of the accord has dismayed several dozen U.S. corporate heavy-hitters, including the boss of tech company Tesla, Elon Musk, as well as Apple chief executive Tim Cook.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and 21 other Republican sent Trump a letter last week urging him to follow through on his campaign pledge to pull out of the climate accord.

"The perception that we have to decide between creating jobs or tackling climate change is a false choice", said Dean Garfield, president of the tech trade group ITI.

A day before Trump's tweet triggered speculation whether the U.S. would withdraw from the deal, Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to move to a renewable energy future which is an important component of the country's Paris pledge.

World leaders, who had hoped to put out a statement of consensus on the Paris Agreement, expressed their frustration, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel declaring: "We have a situation where six, or if you also include the European Union seven, are against one".

"Coal plants continue to retire in the U.S. because they simply don't make economic sense any more", it says.

If the United States withdraws from the Paris accord, signed by almost 200 countries, then it would be a huge setback to the worldwide efforts to curtail global warming given the fact that the USA is the largest polluter in the world. The U.S. has agreed to reduce its emissions by 2025 to 26 percent to 28 percent of 2005 levels - about 1.6 billion tons.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called President Donald Trump's decision "a stunning abdication of American leadership", saying in a statement that pulling out of the pact will result in "a grave threat to our planet's future".

"... Responsible policymakers should be honest about what's going on in the USA coal sector - including the causes of coal's decline and the unlikeliness of its resurgence - rather than offer false hope that the glory days can be revived", says the Columbia report.

"We will continue to lobby the Americans and the White House to show the leadership they have shown in the past on reducing CO2", he said.

Word of Trump's decision comes a day after the president met with Scott Pruitt, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

US carbon emissions have declined to near 30-year lows, a trend driven by increased natural gas use replacing coal.

Global leaders began reacting to the reports of Trump's plans.

Musk has been criticized for working with Trump but defended his position on the councils: "At least words were said", Musk told an interviewer at the TED 2017 conference.

City leaders are not alone in their efforts. Withdrawing would leave the United States as one of just three countries outside the agreement.

The prime minister of India said it would be a "crime" to spoil the environment for future generations. "But to avoid that criticism you would impose higher costs on American voters, American consumers, American businesses, retard USA economic growth going forward, and break a campaign promise". That promise helped rally supporters sharing his skepticism of global efforts to police U.S. carbon emissions. Given the destructive effects of climate change, it would constitute a betrayal of the health and welfare of our children and the planet.

Multiple news outlets, citing unnamed sources, reported that the president plans to make good on a key campaign promise by removing the United States from the 2015 agreement aimed at limiting global warming.

In 2015, 195 nations, including the U.S. and Australia, approved a historic pact to roll back global warming and show up defence against its impacts.
