Trump delays decision on Paris climate accord

Despite the lack of commitment, French President Emmanuel Macron had warm words for Trump.

He had given some ground, agreeing to language in the final G7 communique about fighting protectionism and promoting free trade - language which may infuriate his supporters at home who voted for his " America first" vision.

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that the discussions were "intense" and the other nations sided with the pledge.

Morale within the G7 has been disrupted due to Trump's uncertainty and the decision from the U.S is still unknown.

One group carried banners objecting to Europe's treatment of migrants from Africa and the Middle East. He solemnly laid a wreath at a Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, had an audience with the pope at the Vatican and stood center stage with Western allies at the annual summits that dominate the diplomatic calendar. Six of the countries agreed to support the Paris climate change agreement; Trump tweeted he will decide next week.

The Italians, who are bearing the brunt of the crisis that is sending hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees to Italy from Africa and the Middle East, had been promoting a food security agenda, noting that more than 20 million people in South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and northeastern Nigeria are at the risk of starvation.

During his trip, Trump also touted a renewed commitment by NATO's member to spend more on defense.

"I think he's leaning to understand the European position", Cohn said. The Times of London reported that he still arrived last to the photo op, forcing the other six to wait for him to show up.

Both Cohn and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster refused to take questions about the latest Russia-related news report alleging Trump son-in-law and top aide Jared Kushner had discussed setting up a secret back channel with Russian Federation during the transition period. He also griped how other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members don't pay their share of 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense.

The mantra was to charm and listen rather than confront the 70-year-old Trump.

"We understand that this is a tool that the administration finds useful to deal with adversaries", she said. "The mood he conveyed is you guys are a bunch of freeloaders". Maybe that will make him more disposed to his European partners as they lobby him to stay in the Paris Climate Accord.

Mr Trump tweeted: "I will make my final decision on the Paris Accord next week!" The White House is also assembling a team of lawyers to protect the president from potential legal troubles. His top economic and national security advisers refused to answer questions during a press briefing Saturday.

All of these matters will further hamper his efforts to implement his policy agenda and push significant legislation through Congress.

After leaving this picturesque town on the rugged Sicilian hillsides, Trump helicoptered to the U.S. Naval Air Station at Sigonella on the island to board Air Force One for the flight home.

How has Mr Trump's trip gone?

From the start, he set a new direction.

"A lot of people in my country are against this agreement", Trump told Macron during their lunch, according to this person.

He appeared particularly comfortable in the setting. On the one hand, the leaders' statement includes references to securityand economic arguments and interests put forward by the U.S. and the United Kingdom that reaffirm countries' sovereign right to controlling their borders and limiting migration levels.

Like many of his predecessors, Trump made a personal appeal for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. One potential compromise that's emerged involves staying in the climate accord but adjusting the US emissions targets.

He made no mention of protectionism.

Leaders of the world's major economies ended a G7 summit on Saturday with a disagreement on climate change.
