Tens of thousands gather in Jerusalem to celebrate 50th anniversary of reunification

President Donald Trump talked up the prospects of peace between Israelis and Palestinians yesterday, saying he believed both sides were committed to a historic deal.

KEITH: And, he said, Netanyahu had assured him he wants peace, too.

"President Trump stressed the importance of creating an environment consistent with the desire for peace", the readout said. Having spent several decades building a business across the world with a focus on the Middle East, it's good to see us reconnecting with our old friends in the region.

"There was not a single hint of a protester anywhere during the whole time we were there", he said.

In his speech yesterday, Mr Trump seemed to acknowledge the complexities of the matter. Paul Gosar of Prescott and Andy Biggs of Gilbert - believe such a move would be the right thing to do, others say it would set back the already hard peace process between the Israelis and Palestinians, both of whom lay claim to Jerusalem.

He, however, offered no specifics on how he planned to make progress in resolving the conflict, with widespread scepticism over whether meaningful talks are possible for now.

The U.S. army invaded Iraq in 2003 and toppled then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, which completely destroyed the country's political system. The global community doesn't recognize Israeli sovereignty over east Jerusalem and Palestinians regard it as the future capital of an independent Palestinian state.

Trump arrived in Bethlehem in a motorcade, crossing a checkpoint at Israel's controversial separation wall, and was greeted by Abbas and other dignitaries outside the presidential palace, The Washington Examiner reported.

In Israel the overall tenor of Trump's trip - which included a visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial on Tuesday - and the warmth exhibited between the president and Netanyahu contrasted sharply with the Israeli prime minister's tense relationship with Obama. But it's clear that, if such a test existed, Donald Trump would not be president - which he proved at a press conference in Israel on May 22. He also suggested Israeli-Palestinian relations could have a domino effect on peace in the region.

"Our fundamental problem is with the occupation and settlements, and failure of Israel to recognize the state of Palestine in the same way we recognize it, which undermines the realization of the two-state solution".

Finally, Trump wrapped up his trip with a visit to the Vatican and a meeting with Pope Francis.

Before departing for the Vatican - the final leg of the president's first overseas trip, which also included Saudi Arabia - Trump gave a keynote address at the Israel Museum.
